Charutar Arogya Mandal (CAM) is the outcome of a dream cherished by the late Dr. H. M. Patel. He envisioned building an institution that would address a long-felt need for a faculty of medicine—an aspiration many believed was unlikely to succeed.
Undeterred, he pursued this vision with the same missionary zeal and dedication that defined his work in shaping Vallabh Vidyanagar. What began as a bold idea has today evolved into a comprehensive ecosystem of healthcare and education.
CAM now manages a National Medical Council-recognized medical college, a 1000-bed National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) accredited tertiary care multi-specialty hospital, a school of nursing, a college of physiotherapy, and institutes of medical technology and allied health sciences. The campus also houses a cancer centre with a bone marrow transplant unit, a dedicated cardiac centre, a 102-bed state-of-the-art critical care facility, a comprehensive diagnostics centre, and a centre for public health studies—all within a well-developed, lush green 100-acre campus.
Building on this strong foundation, under the able guidance of former Chairman Dr. Amrita Patel, CAM translated Dr. H. M. Patel’s vision into reality—delivering comprehensive, personalized healthcare with unwavering commitment and compassion, while ensuring affordability for all.
She was succeeded by Atul Patel, whose leadership further strengthened CAM’s growth and outreach. Today, the organization is led by Tarak Patel, who continues to guide CAM with a forward-looking vision, building on its legacy of service and excellence.
At its core, CAM upholds a steadfast principle: no patient is denied treatment due to financial constraints. This commitment defines its identity.
In an era where increasing commercialization has challenged the very ethos of the medical profession—one that should be guided by humanity, ethical responsibility, and service—CAM stands firm in its vision. It continues to serve as a living example of what healthcare is meant to be: noble in purpose, compassionate in practice, and constantly evolving to better serve humanity.
The journey over the past five decades has been both demanding and deeply fulfilling. CAM’s hospital extends substantial financial support to those in need, including complete waivers for patients who cannot afford treatment. It is empaneled under several government healthcare schemes, where reimbursements often cover only a fraction of the actual cost of care. Additionally, the trauma centre regularly treats critically ill patients who arrive without the means to pay. Despite these challenges, CAM remains unwavering in its commitment.
As a result, the hospital bears an annual deficit exceeding ?35 crore in its effort to ensure that care remains accessible to all—an amount that continues to rise each year.
Extending this commitment beyond healthcare, CAM’s educational institutions also play a vital role in social responsibility. They provide opportunities to students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, including scholarships for professional courses such as MBBS, thereby nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals.
CAM continues to move forward with a clear purpose—to innovate, expand, and strengthen its ability to deliver equitable, high-quality healthcare and education, staying true to the values on which it was founded.
